Curriculum

All candidates for a degree in liberal arts and sciences must complete the graduation requirements listed in the section of the SDSU General Catalog, “Graduation Requirements.” No more than 68 units in speech, language, and hearing sciences can apply to the degree. A minor is not required.

Overview of SLHS Curriculum

The following introductory-level courses are required before starting the sequence that constitutes the major. Many may also be used to satisfy the General Education requirements.

Transfer Students, please use http://www.assist.org to find the equivalent community college or junior college courses that will transfer to SDSU.  Transfer students must have an overall 2.75 GPA in order to apply to SDSU and declare the SLHS major.

Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Major

Upper division requirements for the speech, language, and hearing sciences major are as follows: Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences 300, 305, 320, 321, 340, 512, 513, 514, 539, and 580 (33 units – see descriptions below).

Current SDSU Students (non-SLHS majors) must have an overall 2.75 GPA in order to be eligible to begin the upper division SLHS coursework.

Junior year
fall semester

  • SLHS 305 – Hearing Sciences (3 units)
  • SLHS 320 – Phonetics (3 units)
  • SLHS 321 – Anatomy and Physiology of Speech (4 units)

spring semester

  • SLHS 300 – Introduction to Language Sciences (3 units)
  • SLHS 340 – Principles of Audiology  (3 units)
  • SLHS 512 – Phonological Acquisition and Disorders (3 units)

Senior year
fall semester

  • SLHS 513 – Foundations of Speech-Language: Development  (4 units)
  • SLHS 580 – Communication Processes and Aging  (3 units)

spring semester

  • SLHS 511 – Aural Rehabilitation  (3 units) – Elective
  • SLHS 514 – Foundations of Speech-Language: Differences and Disorders in Children  (3 units)
  • SLHS 539 – Neuroanatomy and Disorders of Speech and Language  (3 units)

All Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) undergraduate majors have the opportunity to participate in a pre-approved international experience to increase awareness of cross-cultural issues, global health, economic, political, cultural, social services, and health challenges experienced by local populations in international environments. Students may participate in residence for two or more weeks. Specific details can be found on the CHHS Undergraduate International Experience web site.

Competency (successfully completing the third college semester or fifth college quarter) is required in one foreign language to fulfill the graduation requirement. Refer to the General Catalog section on “Graduation Requirements.”

Passing the Writing Proficiency Assessment with a score of 10 or above or completing one of the approved upper division writing courses (W) with a grade of C (2.0) or better. See the General Catalog section on “Graduation Requirements” for a complete listing of requirements.

Time Limitation – All courses for the major must be completed within seven years for the granting of the undergraduate degree. Any course completed more than seven years prior to the date on which all requirements for the degree are completed cannot be used to satisfy unit requirements for the degree. Exceptions for individual courses must be approved by the department and filed with the Office of the Registrar.

Students admitted to SDSU are designated a “pre-major” of their chosen program, or as an undeclared major.   SLHS pre-majors are automatically admitted to the SLHS major upon meeting the following criteria:
