Be Part of a Research Study

The Language Learning Lab at SDSU is currently looking for adult and child participants for a study looking at brain processing during word learning.

The 2-hour study involves looking at pictures, answering questions, and completing an experimental word learning task while wearing a cap with electrodes to collect brainwave (EEG) data. 

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 18-35 years old
  • Be monolingual English or bilingual primary English speaker
  • Be right-handed
  • Have normal hearing
  • Not be taking any medications other than over-the-counter allergy medication or birth control
  • Not have a known IQ less than 75
  • Have no history of:
    • Brain or serious head injury
    • Neurological illness, disorders, or dysfunction (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder)
    • Developmental disorders or ADD/ADHD
    • Language delays or disorders
    • Unstable medical conditions

Child participants

Children will come to the lab with their parents where they will perform tasks such as looking at pictures and answering questions and will complete a word learning task while wearing a cap with electrodes to allow us to collect brainwave data. The whole process takes around 3-4 hours and can be split into multiple sessions as needed. Participants will be compensated for their participation. We require the presence of a parent or legal guardian to sign a consent form.

To qualify, children must:

  • Be 8-16 years old
  • Be right-handed
  • Be monolingual English or bilingual primary English speaker
  • Have normal hearing
  • Have no history of:
    • Brain injury or neurological illness
    • Developmental disorders or ADD/ADHD

We offer flexible scheduling including weekday daytime slots, weekends, and after school.
