Jonathan Udoff, a Ph.D. student in the SDSU/UCSD Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorder and mentored by Drs. Karen Emmorey and Ignatius Nip was the winner of the Best Student Presentation Prize at the Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research conference in London, England.
This international conference is held every three years and is one of the most prestigious venues for presenting sign language research. Mr. Udoff’s research titled “Mouthings and their reductions: A kinematic approach” emerged as the first place winner in a field of very strong presentations. His research reveals that mouthings of spoken words are coordinated with the hand movements of accompanying signs. Mr. Udoff presented his lecture in American Sign Language.
