ASL / Deaf Studies Courses

  • SLHS 101. American Sign Language I (4 units) – Beginning level communication competence in ASL. Introduction to the syntax, semantics, and use of American Sign Language.. Readings include the culture of the deaf community and audism. Not open to students who have completed three (or more) years of high school American Sign Language classes unless the third course was completed five or more years ago.

 

  • SLHS 102. American Sign Language II (4 units) – prerequisite: SLHS 101 – Intermediate level communicative competence in American Sign Language. Readings include deaf biography. Not open to students who have completed four (or more) years of high school American Sign Language classes unless the fourth course was completed five or more years ago.

 

  • SLHS 150. Sign Languages and Deaf Culture (3 units) – Introduction to sign languages of the world and to the nature and structure of human language. Introduction to Deaf Studies and general issues affecting minority societies.

 

  • SLHS 201. American Sign Language III (4 units) – prerequisite: SLHS 102 – Advanced communicative competence in American Sign Language on the third level. Readings of deaf-related articles or books, and narrative ASL presentations are required. Practice of all language skills of American Sign Language at the intermediate-advanced level, for example, classifiers and conceptual accuracy. Not open to students who have completed five (or more) years of high school American Sign Language classes unless the fifth course was completed five or more years ago.

 

  • SLHS 202. American Sign Language IV (4 units) – prerequisite: SLHS 201 – Advanced level communicative competence in American Sign Language on the fourth level. Readings of deaf-related articles or books, and narrative ASL presentations are required. Practice of all language skills of American Sign Language at the advanced level, for example, sign phrases and storytelling techniques.

 

  • SLHS 350. Advanced Topics: Deaf Culture (3 units) – American Deaf community. Focus on language, social practices, evolution of cultural identity. Practicum (with ASL interpreters if necessary) will provide students with direct interaction within deaf community.

 

  • SLHS 357. Fieldwork with the Deaf (1-2 units) – Field observation and participation under supervision in school and community settings with small groups of deaf and hard of children and/or adults. Two hours of activity per unit of credit and one hour of staffing.

 

  • SLHS 550. Education of Deaf Children and Youth (3 units) – prerequisites: SLHS 350 – Educational programs, services and resources for learners who are deaf; historical background, philosophy, sociological and psychological problems

 

  • SLHS 558. ASL Structure and Acquisition (3 units) – prerequisites: SLHS 201, SLHS 350, and SLHS 300 or LING 452 – ASL phonology, morphology, syntax, and discourse structure, including complex sentence structure, storytelling, and sociolinguistics. Analyzing language samples in ASL.
