Application Instructions

Students are admitted only in the Fall. Application period opens October 1. Deadline for receipt (not postmark) of all application materials is January 20. Deadline for receipt (not postmark) of GRE and TOEFL (if applicable) scores is February 1.

Complete the on-line Cal-State University (CSU) application: www.csumentor.edu.
In order to apply to the Joint Doctoral Program, applicants must submit the following in a single envelope:
- Application Form - Download the Application Form (pdf, 145 kb) and print 1 copy
- Statement of Purpose
- Three letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes - Download the Recommendation Form (pdf, 138 kb) and print 3 copies
- One official transcript from each college or university attended
- Publication reprints or presentation abstracts, if available

GRE/TOEFL: When you register to take the GRE and TOEFL, there is space to indicate the Institution and Department Codes. Submit your GRE and TOEFL scores to both campuses:

SDSU: Institution Code is 4682
Department Code is 0620

UCSD: Institution Code is 4836
Department Code is R4836

Note: Students applying to the Joint Doctoral Program must be admitted by both SDSU and UCSD. Do not send any application materials to UCSD, except for GRE and TOEFL scores. If admitted to the program, UCSD will send additional materials to be completed. Payment of a UCSD application fee will be required at that time.
