Program Overview

The School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences offers a Master of Arts degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, the entry level degree for the professions of speech-language pathology and speech and hearing science.

The School offers two M.A. programs/concentrations: the clinical program in Speech-Language Pathology and the Communicative Sciences concentration. The clinical program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).

The School no longer enters students into the M.A. Audiology program. Students interested in this area are instead encouraged to apply to the AuD Joint Doctoral Program.

Speech-Language Pathology M.A. students are admitted only in the Fall term of each year. Students with backgrounds other than speech-language pathology can apply for classified graduate standing (WOB: with other background). If admitted, the program will take 7 semesters or three years. Following the first year of prerequisite classes, students move directly into the two year program. Students with backgrounds in the field apply for the 5 semester or two year program (two academic years and the intervening summer).

The MA program in speech-language pathology is full-time and intensive. Most students do not have jobs while enrolled in the program, and rely instead on financial aid. Some students do hold 5- to 10-hour/week positions, though these are generally on campus. Due to the scheduling and sequencing of the MA courses, we do not allow students to complete the program on a part-time basis. No students are admitted into post-baccalaureate status. Applicants With Other Backgrounds (WOBs) than speech-language pathology can apply for classified graduate standing.
