Professional Education Requirements in Speech-Language Pathology

OBJECTIVE ASHA CERTIFICATION STATE LICENSURE PUBLIC SCHOOL CREDENTIALS
TITLE: CERTIFICATE OF CLINICAL COMPETENCE IN SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY (CCC-SLP) CALIFORNIA STATE LICENSE to practice Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology CLINICAL REHABILITATIVE SERVICES CREDENTIAL in Language-Speech and Hearing Services (CRS-LSH)
ISSUED BY: American Speech-Language- Hearing Association Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee of Dept. Of Consumer Affairs California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
APPLIES TO: Members of ASHA
Non-members who chose to be certified
All practitioners of Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology working in non-exempt settings All practitioners of Speech-Language Pathology in California schools
FAILURE TO COMPLY: Threaten loss of membership and certification
Must abide by Code of Ethics
Illegal to practice without license
Loss of license - criminal violation
Illegal to practice in schools without appropriate public school credential
REQUIREMENTS:
Academic:
Masters Degree from ASHA accredited program. Masters Degree or equivalent. See licensure manual. Masters Degree in SLHS. Specific coursework outlined by individual universities.
Practicum: 25 hours of observation, then 375 clock hours of practicum. Note that 325 hours of practicum must be completed while in the graduate program and must include hours experiences across the life span in assessment and intervention. 300 clock hours with a wide spectrum of age and communication disorders 350 clock hours in pattern similar to ASHA requirements, 100 must be in public schools
Exams: National Exam in SPPA National Exam in SPPA CBEST & National Exam in SPPA
