PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Filing for ASHA Certification

  1. Download the ASHA Certification and Membership Handbook for Speech-Language Pathology from the ASHA website.

  2. If you are applying for certification within 3 years of obtaining your master's degree, you are not required to complete the entire application. SDSU is an approved ASHA program so the coursework and practicum information on the ASHA application is pre-approved. You will, however, need this information for state licensure.

  3. Complete pages A1, A2, and A9 of the application form if you initiated and completed your work in an ASHA accredited program. Follow the instructions if you did not.

  4. Request a printout of clinical hours from the clinic office staff at least one week prior to submitting application. Make sure all clinical practicum contact hours are complete and signed in your clinic file.

  5. Submit completed application and hours printout to the Clinic Office. Allow two weeks to verify hours and have the program director sign where indicated. The original application will be returned to you to copy and forward to ASHA with your fees.

  6. A copy of your clinic hours and ASHA application records will be maintained at SDSU.

  7. The Clinical Fellowship must be completed within 4 years of the date the academic coursework and practicum were completed. Once initiated, the clinical fellowship must be completed within a maximum of 36 consecutive months. See the Handbook for more information. There are some critical timelines that must be observed.
