Biography:

Dr. Vera Gutiérrez-Clellen is a professor and Coordinator of the Bilingual Certificate program in the School of Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences. Dr. Gutiérrez-Clellen is a clinically certified bilingual speech-language pathologist with more than 20 years of clinical experience in the field. Her research focuses on the language acquisition of bilingual learners with typical and impaired development across cognitive and linguistic domains. Specifically, her research is designed to (a) examine the interdependence between lexical and grammatical domains within and across languages; (b) identify cognitive and linguistic predictors of second language acquisition in both typical and atypical learners; and (c) identify factors that mediate language learning over time across children with and without language impairment. To this end, her research program uses cross-sectional and longitudinal design methods with samples of children with various degrees of second language proficiency and severity. Aspects of cross-linguistic influence, language transfer, and language change for lexical and grammatical domains are also evaluated by examining the role of language exposure and use over time as well as the effect of language intervention on the cognitive and linguistic profiles of children with different language abilities.
