Fall semester welcome from the School's Director

posted 8/28/09

Welcome to the fall semester. This has always been a time of excitement as we welcome new students and begin the new school year refreshed and renewed. However, this fall it is a little harder to feel that way. California is in the midst of a severe budget crisis that has consequences for SDSU and SLHS. SDSU budget cuts will affect SLHS's programs, faculty, staff and students. Faculty and staff face salary reductions and must take mandated furlough days throughout the year. (Furlough days that affect a class will be listed in the course syllabus.) Students face higher fees, have fewer class options and less access to faculty. Even our clinics will be affected because we may have fewer service days to offer clients due to faculty and staff furloughs.

We face significant challenges but we cannot and will not let these deter us from our mission. SLHS has much to be proud of with regard to our achievements and our commitment to excellence in teaching, clinical training and research. As SLHS educators, staff and students we are more familiar than most with the struggles faced by individuals with communicative disorders. We study these individuals in our research, provide services to them in our clinics and are both humbled and amazed by the courage, grace and "can do" attitude they show as they work to overcome their problems.

We intend to do the same with regard to the budget cuts. Our faculty and staff will do their best to make sure students receive the quality education that is the hallmark of SLHS. I pledge to do everything I can to protect the interests of our programs, faculty, staff and students. In short, we are committed to getting through this very difficult situation. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions. Have an outstanding fall semester!

Regards,

Beverly B. Wulfeck, Ph.D.
School Director
