Harriet Kopp, Ph.D.

Harriet Green Kopp Friedrich
1917-2007

Harriet Green Kopp Friedrich, professor emeritus in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences died on Feb. 11, 2007 after a short illness.

Dr. Kopp received her M.A. from Brooklyn College in 1940 (her thesis was on speech acoustics) and her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1940 (topic was stuttering). She was dually certified in speech-language pathology and audiology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Prior to coming to SDSU in 1970 Dr. Kopp had already established a reputation as a well-respected educator and researcher. She conducted research at Bell Telephone Laboratory and taught at Brooklyn College, Indiana University, and Michigan State University.

At SDSU, Dr. Kopp served as Chair of what was then the Department of Communicative Disorders from 1973 to 1980. During her tenure at SDSU, Dr. Kopp was a driving force in the establishment and expansion of undergraduate and graduate programs in the department. Widely recognized at SDSU as a strong leader, she served as Interim Dean of the College of Health and Human Services from 1980-1983.

Dr. Kopp retired from SDSU in 1983. After her retirement, Dr. Kopp continued to be interested in and supportive of programs within the School. In addition, she had a long history of service and support to the School, College and other programs on the SDSU campus. Most recently, Dr. Kopp established the Harriet Green Kopp Doctoral Dissertation Award and the AuD Project Award because of her strong commitment to graduate education and to support excellence and scholarship.
